Granville Fire
(Page 1)
The following pictures are of a fire that we were involved in
on May
24th, 2000. The fire started about 7 p.m. in the back of one of
the
buildings from burning cardboard and paper. The fire consumed a total
of
6 commercial buildings including the town of Granville's Village
Hall.
Several of the buildings also contained residential apartments in the
spaces
above the businesses.
The fire required a total response of 23 fire departments
including
several semi tractor tankers (tenders) full of water. The buildings
all had undergone several remodelings and face lifts which provided
opportunity
for the fire, pushed by 30 mph wind gusts, to race across attics and
false
ceilings. The fire appeared to be under control several times.
Eventually,
in order to stop the spread of fire to more of downtown Granville, the
use of a local contractor and his backhoe were used to knock down a
vacant
building creating a fire break, thereby stopping any further spread of
fire. We appreciate all of the support we received from the surrounding
fire departments, as well as the support from the people in the
community.
Without that assistance, this fire could have caused a greater deal of
damage.
